How to Layer a Face Oil and a Moisturizer — and Why the Order Matters
Face oils and moisturizers are often treated as either-or products. In reality, they serve different functions — and they work better together than apart, provided they are applied in the right order.
Why Layering Order Matters in Skincare
Skincare layering follows principles based on molecular weight and ingredient function. Products with smaller molecules or water-based formulas are applied first, where they can penetrate more readily. Heavier, oil-based formulas are applied afterward, where they form a more protective surface layer.
That said, the relationship between a face oil and a moisturizer is more nuanced than a simple 'thinnest to thickest' rule.
What Face Oils and Moisturizers Actually Do
A moisturizer typically works on three levels. Humectants (like Sodium Hyaluronate or Glycerin) attract water into the skin. Emollients (like Shea Butter or Squalane) fill in the spaces between skin cells and improve texture. Occlusives create a surface layer that slows water evaporation. A well-formulated moisturizer contains a combination of all three.
A face oil is primarily an emollient and, to some degree, an occlusive. It softens, nourishes, and creates a protective layer on the skin. It does not hydrate in the way that humectant-based products do — because oil and water do not mix. This is a key distinction.
The Right Order: Oil First, Then Cream
The most effective approach for most skin types is to apply the face oil first, then the moisturizer.
This may seem counterintuitive. Many people assume oil should go last to 'seal in' other products. That logic applies to very heavy, purely occlusive products — like thick balms — not to the lightweight, fast-absorbing botanical oils used in most facial oil formulas.
When you apply a lightweight face oil first, it conditions the skin surface and creates a slightly enhanced environment for the moisturizer to follow. The moisturizer's humectants can still reach the skin effectively, and its own occlusive components then help seal in the full routine.
Applying moisturizer first and then layering a heavier oil on top can prevent the moisturizer's water-attracting ingredients from reaching the skin as effectively — creating a barrier before the barrier work is done.
When to Use Oil Alone
On some evenings — particularly when skin feels well-balanced — a face oil applied on its own can be sufficient. Its emollient properties condition the skin overnight without the additional weight of a cream. This approach is common in French skincare philosophy, where the principle is to use the minimum necessary product, applied with full attention.
How We Approach This at Clique Beauty
The Radiance Face Oil and Radiance Face Cream are formulated to be used together, in that order.
The Face Oil — a blend of predominantly organic botanical oils including Sunflower, Jojoba, Grape Seed, Argan, Rosehip, Evening Primrose, and Nigella Sativa Seed Oil, with Bakuchiol and Tocopherol — absorbs readily and prepares the skin to receive hydration. Applied first, it softens without creating a heavy occlusive barrier.
The Radiance Face Cream follows: Niacinamide supports barrier function and skin tone, Sodium Hyaluronate delivers humectant hydration, and 5% Organic Shea Butter combined with Squalane provides emollient and occlusive coverage. 1% stabilized Vitamin C (Ascorbyl Glucoside) and a botanical complex complete the formula.
Together, they address nourishment (oil), hydration (moisturizer), and barrier support — without either product competing with the other.
A Practical Layering Sequence
1. Cleanse — apply to clean, slightly damp skin for best absorption
2. Face Oil — warm 3 to 4 drops between your palms and press gently into the skin; allow 1 to 2 minutes
3. Face Cream — apply in upward strokes over the oil
4. SPF (morning only) — as a final step, after the cream has settled
Morning vs. Evening
Both products can be used morning and evening. In the morning, follow with SPF — particularly if your cleansing step includes exfoliating acids.
✦ If you're currently using the Radiance Face Oil and Radiance Face Cream separately, try layering them together using this sequence for two weeks. The difference in skin feel and texture is often noticeable.
